What is Fresh Media?

Fresh Media is a celebration of innovation and independent media, and a re-imagining of media and journalism in Canada. Our basic objectives are:

1. To ignite a national conversation to re-imagine media and journalism in Canada.

2. To celebrate the exciting and innovative experiments in independent and public media currently underway.

3. To develop a crowd-sourced plan to support innovative and quality media and independent journalism.

It’s an exciting time for media in Canada - our current media system is experiencing a rapid transition due to the crisis in big media and the rise of exciting web-based tools and citizen-powered journalism.

Recognizing that there is a void to be filled, we embrace all forms of media – from social media to investigative journalism, and storytelling through diverse forms of art – in order to create a more democratic and informed media system in Canada.

We believe that cross media collaboration is essential to tell our stories in today’s media landscape; which includes blogging, music, film, visual arts, new media, print media, podcasts, radio, and television and much more!

Now is the time to re-imagine and create what we want Canada’s mediascape to look like. We have the agency to create an innovative and informative media system, to celebrate what’s good now and to create a new media future together.

We are a diverse group of individuals that have come together to celebrate all forms of media and innovation and help inspire the re-imagining of media and journalism in Canada. This is an exciting time for media — recognizing that there is a void to be filled from our traditional media system, we embrace all forms of media and recognize the importance of citizen-powered journalism.
